The Literacy Council of the Black Hills is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) organization providing free, individualized tutoring and group educational opportunities to help people meet their personal goals and enhance their contributions to the community.

We have been meeting adult literacy needs in the Black Hills since 1984!

We offer workshops to train volunteers in tutoring basic reading and writing skills and English as a second language so they can help our students.

Our volunteer tutors complete a twelve-hour training approved by ProLiteracy. All instruction is free. Tutoring sessions are held at the public places, times, and days that are convenient to both tutors and students. Tutoring materials are located at the Rapid City Public Library.

Tutors and students are encouraged to meet a minimum of once a week and to work as partners in setting goals.

Goals range from getting a better job to helping kids with school work, communicating with doctors and teacher to getting a driver’s license and passing the citizenship test.

Our students represent more than 30 countries!
